Senior Nutrition Program

Providing supplemental food assistance so seniors don’t have to make tough choices.

Every day, many seniors in our community have to make impossible decisions.

Purchase food or medication.  Purchase food or pay household expenses.   Limited financial resources make it challenging for many seniors in our community to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

In February 2012, the Food Bank began its Senior Bag distribution program to the William C. Ellison and LaSalle Park Apartments in St. Joseph County. The program expanded and now serves our six-county service area and serves seniors living in low-income senior complexes.

Each bag may include shelf-stable items such as rice or dry beans, canned tuna or chicken, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, boxed potatoes, pasta and sauce, applesauce, cereal, crackers, soups, bread and one frozen meat.  Fresh produce and personal care items are also included, based on availability.

Older Americans have taken care of all the younger generations and now it is the younger generations turn to take care of them when they need it most.
