Healthy Choices Market

Learn. Choose. Live

The Healthy Choices Market is a program of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana created to provide individuals with high risk medical problems and little-to no-insurance a dignified, educational experience to encourage healthy food choices.  By working in partnership with Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Memorial Hospital of South Bend and the American Culinary Federation South Bend Chefs and Cooks Association, the Healthy Choices Market serves clients who have diabetes and high blood pressure. Together, our goal is to affect overall community health and create a better understanding of healthy eating with the client being one step closer to changing their lifestyle.

The Healthy Choices Market is a doctor referral and appointment only program.

The Experience - The Healthy Choices Market is based on three elements: Learn. Choose. Live.

Learn - Clients will learn how to make healthy recipes to encourage a healthier lifestyle through an educational class. The class includes a hands-on experience with a local chef from the American Culinary Federation South Bend Chefs and Cooks Association, who instruct clients step-by-step to show them how to cook healthy, low-cost meals.  Clients can sample foods prepared during the class. In addition, attends receive a binder filled with recipes and other information at the end of the session.

Choose - After the class is finished, clients can select produce and other healthy items to create healthier meals at home.

Live - Upon completion of the educational and shopping components, each client will receive progress points that will be continually added each time they visit, allowing them a chance to receive special prizes.

Using 'food as medicine,' our goal is to see significant positive changes in participating clients' health.
