How will you lend your voice to speak out against hunger?

September is Hunger Action Month.  It's time to speak out against hunger in your community.

In recognition of the Food Bank's 25th anniversary, below are 25 ways you can lend your voice to speak out against hunger.  Donate. Volunteer. Advo

Donate:

  • Organize a food drive at your workplace, club or place of worship.  Our goal is to collect 36,530 lbs. of food from September through December to distribute to member agencies in our six-county service area.
  • Pack your leftovers for lunch and donate the money you saved.  Each $1.00 provides 2.73 pounds of food for someone in need.
  • Make coffee at home and donate your savings to the Food Bank.
  • Give fresh produce and healthy food donations to your neighborhood food pantry or the Food Bank.
  • Orangize a Spaghetti Sunday, Macaroni and Cheese Monday, Tuna Tuesday or Canned Soup Saturday food drive.
  • Sponsor a Mobile Food Pantry, Healthy Choices Market, Food 4 Kids Backpack Program or the Senior Nutrition Program.  Call (574) 232.9986 ext. 124 for details.
  • BOGO when grocery shopping - Buy One Give One.
  • Donate 25 non-perishable food items to the Food Bank during the month of September.

Volunteer:

  • Be a Hunger Hero - Share your time and plan a teambuilding day of volunteering at the Food Bank or come by yourself.
  • Share your time and talents at our on-site food pantry or one of our 150 agency partners in Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties - make a difference in your community!
  • Show us your #FBNIHelpie.  Take a selfie while your are volunteering and tag us on Facebook @Food-Bank-of-Northern-Indiana or on Twitter @FoodBkNIndiana and include #HungerActionMonth.

Advocate:

  • Go Orange for Hunger Awareness on Thursday, September 13, Hunger Action Day.  Snap a selfie and show us your orangeyist orange and tag us on Facebook @Food-Bank-of-Northern-Indiana or on Twitter @FoodBkNIndiana and include #HungerActionMonth.
  • Follow our 30 Days HAM Heroes in September on Facebook @Food-Bank-of-Northern-Indiana and start a conversation about hunger in our communities.
  • Share your thoughts about hunger on an empty paper plate.  Post o your Facebook page and tag us, too.
  • Change your profile photo to orange to show your support for those who struggle with hunger.
  • Tell Congress that federal nutrition programs matter.
  • Resolve to throw away less food.
  • Promote access to healthy foods.

Educate:

  • Take the SNAP Challenge - Spend only $4.00 per day on food for one week during the month of September and share your experience with family, co-workers and friends on social media.
  • Visit feedindiana.org and learn how we are creating healthier communities.
  • Tour our facility and learn about our Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, Healthy Choices Market, Mobile Food Pantry Program, Senior Nutrition Program, Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Community Food Pantry of St. Joseph County.
  • Suggest books about hunger for your book club.
  • Set an empty plate at your table to remind you of those who are at risk of hunger.
  • Skip one or more meals each day during the month of September and share how you feel when you are hungry.
  • Share these sobering statistics - 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 4 children go hungry in our community every day.
